On April 11, 2023, ANCOR provided a written statement for the record on a hearing held by the U.S. Senate Finance Committee's Health Subcommittee titled "An Oral Health Crisis: Identifying and Addressing Health Disparities."

In the statement, ANCOR shared the following:

  • Most US states provide some form of dental coverage under Medicaid, but some states provide no coverage or only emergency services for adults.
  • Budget shortfalls may lead to further reductions or elimination of dental benefits, which can negatively impact people’s health and wellbeing.
  • The Medicaid Dental Benefit Act of 2023 is supported by ANCOR to improve coverage of dental and oral health services for adults under Medicaid.
  • There is a lack of dental providers who accept Medicaid, which is partly due to low reimbursement rates and lack of education and training on how to assist individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
  • ANCOR supports measures to improve education and training for dental providers and partnerships among providers of dental care, health care, and long-term supports and services.
