Betting on the Market or the Election?
Over a year ago I sat in the office of a prominent disability rights advocate, an individual who is at the forefront of stronger integration policies and who has not historically demonstrated great concern for provider issues. After hearing my concerns about the down side risk of pushing policy forward too fast, she opined that if she were a provider today (mind you this was over a year ago), she’d wait to see who got elected president before making any irreversible decisions towards compliance with the HCBS community settings rule.
Growth, Leadership, Succession, and Success
At the beginning of my senior year of high school I decided to put my name in for consideration as a captain of our football team. I am still mystified as to what possessed me to do so. My candidacy was nearly short lived when I learned I would have to give a speech to my teammates on why I should be considered a good choice for such a role. My hesitancy and ill-formed public speaking skills aside, I was elected one of the captains that year and learned a lot about the value of teamwork and working very hard to accomplish your goals.

The Cliff and Long Term Services and Supports
How many more years can we hold our finger in the dike before community agencies providing long term supports and services (LTSS) to people with disabilities are overwhelmed completely? With the implementation of the HCBS community rule and DOL overtime rule, it feels like we are about to get crushed. Some of us have endured multiple changes before, and the LTSS system lurched forward, but now? Solutions are not coming easily.
