ANCOR is thrilled that a bill we have long supported and contributed to the content of, U.S. Representative Michelle Lujan-Grisham’s (D-NM) National Care Corps Act, became law this past Friday, September 28, 2018! The bill creates a program to be housed by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), structured similarly to AmeriCorps. Its goal is to help fill the growing need for caregivers and direct support staff across a variety of contexts including, notably, for services and supports delivered to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The bill passed as part of the federal budget bill the President signed on Friday and has received $5 million in funding. Read U.S. Representative Lujan Grisham’s press release here.

ANCOR has supported this legislation since late 2016 when it was first drafted, inviting U.S. Representative Lujan-Grisham’s staff to speak about it at our January 2017 Government Relations Retreat in Baltimore, MD. We are excited to keep members informed of next steps and opportunities as this bill now becomes a reality!
