ANCOR has recently completed its largest administrative advocacy effort to date, focusing on the creation of a Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). Through the ANCOR comment portal, more than 1,400 individual comments were submitted to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), highlighting the importance of establishing a distinct SOC code for DSPs. This surge in advocacy reflects the critical need for formal recognition of DSPs as a unique profession, which would improve data collection and inform policies that address the ongoing workforce crisis in this field.

These efforts are in response to the OMB’s announcement that it is beginning the process of revising the SOC Manual for the 2028 edition. The revision process, led by the Standard Occupational Classification Policy Committee (SOCPC), is a crucial step in ensuring that occupational classifications accurately reflect the roles and contributions of workers across various industries, including care workers.

ANCOR submitted formal comments to OMB urging the creation of a SOC for DSPs. And, a coalition of disability, workforce, and provider organizations also submitted formal written comments
