Highlights for Providers from the State of the Union

Last Tuesday the President focused his first State of the Union speech on the tax reform bill, a call for Congress to develop an infrastructure plan, his immigration proposal and foreign relations. Of interest to providers, ANCOR noted that the president also called for investment in workforce development and job training – see below for the quote.

“As tax cuts create new jobs, let us invest in workforce development and job training. Let us open great vocational schools so our future workers can learn a craft and realize their full potential. And let us support working families by supporting paid family leave.” – Page 11.

While the President also connected workforce issues to giving a second chance to people with former convictions, he did not further elaborate on workforce development. ANCOR will continue to monitor and report on the Administration’s workforce efforts, including the Department of Labor’s Apprenticeship Taskforce which we have discussed in previous newsletters.

For members interested in the Democratic response, it was delivered by Congressman Joe Kennedy (D-MA), who focused on the importance of not pitting Americans against each other and promised support to DACA recipients. Please click here for Congressman Kennedy’s full speech.
