Self-Direction

Choosing where you live, who you live with, who supports you, how you spend your days and more. That’s a life we all want to live, and it’s all possible when people can direct their own services.

About This Priority

Whereas traditional service delivery models rely on a case manager or supports coordinator to direct which services a person accepts and under which conditions, self-direction pushes for progress by putting the people leveraging community services in the driver’s seat. Self-direction—being in charge of what one’s own support plan looks like—typically involves engaging people to make choices about what services to take advantage of, how to spend their own Medicaid dollars, and who to hire and fire to deliver those services.

Because different states have different rules about who can take advantage of self-direction, and because different people have different preferences when it comes to their services, ANCOR curates resources to help guide your learning about self-direction.
