Thirteen States to Cut Medicaid to Balance Budgets

July 27, 2012

In an effort to balance already strained budgets, 13 states are moving to cut Medicaid by reducing benefits, reducing payments to health providers, and/or changing eligibility standards. These cuts threaten to limit access to care for an estimated 60 million people and may make it more difficult to expand the program as provided for by the Affordable Care Act in 2014. The concern is that some providers may be unwilling to accept new Medicaid patients, which would leave newly eligible individuals fewer care options.

More information, including state-by-state highlights of some of the changes, may be found in this Kaiser Health News article.
