Supercommittee Fails

November 21, 2011

On Monday, the chairmen of the supercommittee announced that the 12-member panel would fail to meet its goal of coming up with a deficit reduction plan.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) said that "after months of hard work and intense deliberations, we have come to the conclusion today that it will not be possible to make any bipartisan agreement available to the public before the committee’s deadline."

The failure means that $1.2 trillion in across-the-board cuts will take effect in 2013.
