State Medicaid Program Given Extension for Implementation of New Regulations

April 6, 2012

On April 4, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services wrote a letter to North Carolina's Medicaid office extending the enforcement of new regulations, which ensure that people living at home receive comparable personal care services as people living in adult care homes, until January.

The prior deadline had been May 1, which state Medicaid officials said was unrealistic given that the new rules could mean as many as 4,000 people living in adult care homes would be disqualified for service.

The new rules were designed to counter what patient advocates have seen as a bias toward residents in institutional care and away from independent living.
