Report Addresses Access to Charter Schools for Students with Disabilities

June 25, 2012

On June 7, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a report to answer questions concerning students with disabilities enrolled in charter schools. The study found that a lower percentage of students with disabilities are enrolled in charter schools than in traditional public schools. The report discusses several factors that contribute to this disparity.

The report concludes with a recommendation that the Secretary of Education issue guidance to assist charter schools in recognizing practices that affect the enrollment of students with disabilities and conduct additional fact finding and research to further identify factors which affect enrollment levels.
