Progress for Medicare in Combating Fraud, But Not Medicaid

June 11, 2012

On June 7, federal officials told a House panel that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is making progress combating Medicare fraud and abuse, but that the same progress has not occurred in combating Medicaid abuse.

Testifying before members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Ann Maxwell from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Service's Office of Inspector General said that “a robust national approach to Medicaid program integrity is imperative” given the size of federal and state outlays to the program. Maxwell noted that Medicaid presents unique challenges to CMS' fraud prevention initiatives, including the differences between state Medicaid programs and the lack of available data.
