On September 13, POLITICO Pro Events hosted a panel of experts discussing what's next for Medicaid in 2017. The panel discussed the program's future in the context of proposed entitlement reform and health care coverage. While there was a consensus that Medicaid needs reforms because of its high cost to the federal budget and the fact that providers are underpaid, panel members disagreed as to the reasons and remedies. Solutions proposed included: privatizing Medicaid; controlling costs by measuring outcomes (e.g. finding procedures that improve long-term health and create savings that way); and using per-capita caps. Participants on the panel were POLITICO Pro Health Care Editor Joanne Kenen, who moderated, Sen. Bill Cassidy, Rep. Frank Pallone, Rebekah Gee and Cindy Gillespie.
