New York Requests Medicaid Cash in Waiver

June 25, 2012

The Times Union reported that New York has asked the federal government for a waiver that would allow the state to keep savings gleaned through reforms in its Medicaid system and reinvest those funds back into the program.

Medicaid is funded evenly by federal and state funds. New York argues that it has reduced the projected federal share by billions of dollars over the next decade through reforms to the system, freeing up cash that could be put to use elsewhere within the Medicaid program.

If approved, the waiver would allow the state to retain approximately $2 billion per year and reinvest it into programs that currently have adequate funding.
