New Report Released on Medical Treatments for People with Disabilities

May 30, 2012

The National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) has released a report, “Devaluing People with Disabilities: Medical Procedures that Violate Civil Rights,” which discusses the medical decision-making process for people with disabilities.

The report was inspired by the “Ashley Treatment,” in which the parents of a girl with severe mental and physical disabilities used a combination of surgery and hormone treatments to artificially stunt her growth in order to, as they argued, better care for her.

The report explores the conflict of interest that can exist between parents and children, the role of the judicial system, the deprivation of rights involved in these cases and how the legal and medical systems can work to protect the human and civil rights of people with disabilities.
