MedPAC Members Express Concern on CMS' Duals Plan

April 6, 2012

At a meeting on April 5, members of Congress' Medicare advisory board expressed concern that a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services demonstration program aimed at aligning financing for people eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid might be too large to be unwound and may inevitably lead to a permanent change in care.

The demo program involves an estimated two million "dual eligible" beneficiaries, which is approximately 20 percent of the duals population. Proponents of the plan claim that such a large scope is necessary in order to achieve the critical mass necessary to test the program.

Transcripts of the meeting are expected to be made available on the MedPAC website next week.
