Legislation to Expand Mental Health Services for Children, Modify Language in SSA

June 15, 2012

On June 13, Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) introduced bipartisan legislation that would expand mental health services for children on Medicaid. Additionally, the legislation would strike the term “mentally retarded” from the Social Security Act, replacing it with “intellectually disabled.”

Senator Kerry explained in a press release that revising the current language “is an effort to remove outdated stigmas and empower parents to help the children they love.”
