ICI Releases Report on Employment Services and Outcomes

May 30, 2012

The Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) at the University of Massachusetts Boston has released the report, “StateData: The National Report on Employment Services and Outcomes 2011.” The report, supported in part by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, details national and state-level data on trends in employment outcomes for people with disabilities, with emphasis on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The report concludes that more individuals continue to be supported in facility-based employment, usually at sub-minimum wages, than in integrated employment. Overall, the data shows that people with intellectual disabilities experience higher rates of unemployment, underemployment, low wages and poverty than individuals without disabilities. The report discusses various strategies for combating such differences, including using coalitions of stakeholders to effect policy change.
