GAO Recommends Options to Increase HUD Program Efficiencies

April 20, 2012

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released its recommendations regarding various options available to reduce costs and create efficiencies in the Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Housing Choice Voucher program.

The program subsidizes private-market rents for approximately 2 million low-income households and also pays administrative fees to more than 2,400 local housing agencies to manage the program.

The GAO recommends reducing unspent funds held in reserves in order to free up funds, implementing administrative reform to streamline requirements and implementing rent reform to better control costs. The full report may be found here.
