GAO Makes Recommendations on Audit Collaboration with States

June 18, 2012

On June 14, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report detailing their findings on the effectiveness of the Medicaid Integrity Group's implementation of the National Medicaid Audit Program, which the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services created to help reduce improper or fraudulent Medicaid payments.

GAO found that the audits conducted under this program were less effective because they used data omitting certain elements key for auditing and recommends that CMS use its findings to update its plan to include plans for effectively monitoring the program, ensure that future reports clearly address the strengths and weaknesses of the audit program and collaborate with states to expand states' own program integrity efforts.
