On June 13, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a report of its assessment of the implementation status of the four home and community-based services (HCBS) options included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
GAO assessed the following in the report:
- How the options are structured to increase the availability of services,
- What is known about states' plans to use the options, and
- Factors affecting states' decisions regarding implementing the options.
The report compares states across various categories in each program examined. GAO concludes by saying that due to the complex nature of Medicaid HCBS options available, it is important that states receive ongoing technical guidance to navigate through the options.
