Dual Eligibles Pilot Program Attracts Large Number of Applicants

May 14, 2012

Modern Healthcare reported on May 7 that a total of more than three million dual-eligibles were included in applications from 23 states hoping to participate in the Financial Alignment Initiative, a pilot program designed to test new care and payment models in order to improve outcomes and lower costs. The number of individuals that would be included is approximately one million more than the program was designed for.

When asked about the number of applicants to the program, Melanie Bella, director of the Medicare-Medicaid Coordination Office at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, said that each proposal will be assessed based on its merits and that no one has been approved yet. She did not comment on methods CMS may use to reduce the number of approved beneficiaries to the two million the program is designed for.
