AMA Calls for ICD-10 Extension

May 18, 2012

In a letter on May 10, the American Medical Association (AMA) asked the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to delay the implementation deadline for ICD-10 for an additional year—to Oct. 1, 2015.

The International Classifications of Diseases, 10th Revision, (ICD-10) is a system that physicians and other providers use to code all diagnoses, symptoms and procedures recorded in conjunction with hospital care in the United States.

Earlier this year, the Department of Health and Human Services postponed implementation of the system from its initial proposed launch date in response to industry concerns about the feasibility of being able to comply within that time frame.
