Long-time U.S. Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA) announced this week he would not seek re-election for his district in 2018. His district has increasingly become a swing district and a majority of his constituents voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. According to The Hill: “His departure means House Republicans will have to defend at least 31 open seats this year due to retirements, resignations and lawmakers seeking other office. By contrast, House Democrats will only have 15 open seats so far.” Read the full article on his retirement here – the article also mentions the retirement of U.S. Representative Ed Royce (R-CA), who chairs the House Transportation Committee and whose constituents also heavily supported the Clinton campaign.
