Additional Congressional Resignations

U.S. Representative Pat Meehan (R-PA) announced he will not seek re-election this year amidst allegations of sexual harassment. His resignation carries implications for Pennsylvania’s redistricting efforts, which the state’s Supreme Court ordered to be finalized by mid-February after finding that current district lines violate the state’s constitution. Notably, the state legislature could choose to sacrifice Congressman Meehan’s district, which currently leans Republican, to become a Democratic district in order to comply with the Court order. Additionally, U.S. Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ) will not seek re-election – he is currently the Chair of the House Appropriations Commitee, an influential committee in Congress because of its role in deciding how much funding various programs and proposals receive.
