On June 20, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced the award of new grants under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to expand community health centers.
The grants awarded to 219 health centers nationwide are expected to expand access to care for more than 1.25 million patients. The grants total $128.6 million.
The health centers are community-based, patient-directed organizations, designed to be responsive to the specific health care needs of the communities in which they are located. In addition to providing access to health care for more individuals, the centers will create approximately 5,640 jobs for doctors, nurses, dental providers and other support staff.
